Making it Work as a Freelancer - with Maya Sharp
An incredibly insightful speaker, Maya Sharp delivered a great talk on how she managed to finish her studies of photography and despite setbacks such as finances and the COVID-19 Pandemic right off the bat, she has managed to achieve some solid success in her passion for photography. Mainly comprising of assisting work, as well as freelanced commissions and personal photographic studies, Maya was able to offer relevant advice for ways to be able to at least make a living as a rising professional photographer.
From this discussion, some key elements that I took away were in regard to being able to pursue a photographic career with confidence. With that confidence must also come patience, determination, hard work, and tough skin. The tough skin is especially important because when tensions are high then people can become edgy and irate. When assisting, everyday is different, you get access to cool places, freelance freedom, meet people, learn and gain support from photographers. Photographers are under a lot of pressure on a shoot and as an assistant you are there to make it easier.
Overall, Maya Sharp was a very informative and helpful speaker.
