Working Practitioner Feedback with Rachel Brown
I had a fantastic opportunity to have my recent project work, exploring expression, looked at critiqued by Rachel Brown, a prolific photographer who is very well established in her career and in the industry as a whole.
Rachel Brown is a photographer, photo director and educator. Alongside her commercial and fine art practice, Rachel has held notable commissioning & production roles; as Photo Director of Harper’s Bazaar UK (2014-2021), Studio Manager of Tim Walker (2011-2014), freelance on the picture desk of British Vogue (2009-2011) and Production Coordinator for Steven Klein (2008). She has made a name for herself, to say the least. Below are a few examples of her work.
With both of us being from Huddersfield it was quite inspiring for me to see someone who grew in a part of town just a stones throw away growing to become so successful. When seeing my work, Rachel was quite impressed with what I have been attempting with my attempts at self-portraiture and how bold the images are. Looking at the edits she gave me advice and even suggestions of perhaps seeing what would happen if I gave the work a masculinity narrative; men do not ordinarily like showing sensitive emotion so boldly and profoundly, and there is such little amount of male self-portraiture out there that this work is rather niche in and of itself. I will explore this new avenue, whether that is where the work ends up finishing or not is yet to be known.
